Moon Under Water Brewery and Pub in Victoria BC

by Geoff McLean on July 3, 2013

It’s time to visit a brewpub in Victoria BC!  The Moon Under Water Brewery and Pub to be exact.  This fine establishment takes its evocative name from a fictional Victorian pub in an essay by George Orwell published in 1946 in the London Evening Standard.  In the essay Orwell describes the attributes of the perfect pub, one of which being a location ‘only two minutes from a bus stop’ and the Moon Under Water in Victoria BC certainly fits this criteria; there is a bus stop just across the street.  Patrons who are living in Victoria will appreciate this, as well as the pub’s invitation to overnight parking for those who drove in but prefer to find a safer way home.  On the pub’s Facebook page they promise your car won’t get towed if left overnight, very accommodating!

In September 2012 the business came under new ownership and is now run by a family devoted to producing quality craft beers and top notch food to go with it.  The brew master, Clay Potter, has an MSc in brewing and distilling from Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland and has put his expertise to good use creating a selection of craft beers that are always 100% natural, unfiltered and naturally carbonated.  These are served alongside a selection of handpicked BC produced ‘guest beers’.

‘The Moon’ bills itself as a true beer bar, serving each style of beer in the appropriate glassware, paired with delicious complementary nosh.  Regulars particularly enjoy Friday night music bingo and the late night menu served Wednesday to Saturday.

If you fall in love with one of Clay’s west coast interpretations of traditional German beer, such as Potts Pils, Creepy Uncle Dunkel ,The Victorious Wiezenbock and Tranquility IPA you can find them  at a number of liquor outlets across Victoria BC.
