by Geoff McLean on February 27, 2013

Mark your calendar!  March 20-24, are the dates of the 2013 Victoria Curling Classic.  People who are living in Victoria have the opportunity to watch some of Canada’s top men’s teams compete against international champions from Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland and Japan.

Canada has always been a strong international competitor in curling and there is a great tradition and much support for curling right here in Victoria BC.  This is the eighth annual Victoria Curling Classic and it’s billed as “Canada vs. the World”.

The four day, twenty-four team competition will take place at the Archie Browning Centre Arena in Esquimalt.  There is $76,000 in prize money up for grabs, with $25,000 going to the winning team.

Confirmed Canadian teams include:

  • Defending champion Kevin Martin from Edmonton;
  • Reigning Tim Hortons Brier and World Champion Glenn Howard of Ontario;
  • Manitoba’s Jeff Stoughton and Mike McEwen;
  • Kevin Koe from Alberta, and
  • Newfoundland’s Brad Gushue.

Our boys will meet some strong competition from international teams playing a triple-knockout format with eight of the squads qualifying for the playoffs.  You can expect to see world-class curling, right here at home in Victoria BC.  Hurry hard and get your tickets at the Victoria Curling Club at 1952 Quadra Street (or phone 250-386-6396) before they’re sold out!
