Lovely Central Saanich sits astride the Saanich Peninsula and contains some of the most fruitful farmland on Vancouver Island. In fact the history of this municipality is rooted in agriculture, even as it continues to grow today. Nowadays it’s just a short drive south on the Pat Bay Highway to reach Victoria, and even before motor vehicle traffic was common, it was still a short journey, so farmers could easily supply the city with fresh goods from their fields.
The agricultural base that established Central Saanich still flourishes, and contributes greatly to the rural atmosphere. The communities that have grown amidst the fields, Brentwood Bay and Saanichton, have distinct small town friendliness, yet all the modern amenities people require can be found within a short distance.
One of the legacies of the past is the Saanich Fair, an old-fashioned country fair complete with all that you would expect to find. From Aunt Mavis’ famous pumpkin pie, to the biggest onion competition, to 4-H cattle being presented by their young owners, it’s all here. Oh, and of course the midway, games of chance and classic fair fare – you know – cotton candy, hot dogs smothered in fried onions, mmmmm! See you on Labour Day weekend!
You can certainly find beautiful country homes in Central Saanich, they’re all over the place, hobby farms, small acreages and semi rural houses on generous lots. If you’re looking for waterfront or waterview property we have that too; east coast or west coast, what’s your preference, sunrise or sunset?
If you want to live in the country, there are some things you should know. You may be sourcing your water from a well, so inquire about supply in a hot summer. There is likely a septic field, check into its condition and maintenance requirements before purchasing. And you will need to contract a private garbage company; the municipality doesn’t provide this service. These are small inconveniences though, to live in such a beautiful place.
