Arbutus is a upscale seaside neighbourhood near the University of Victoria, known for its peaceful atmosphere and timeless west coast beauty. Nestled along the eastern edge of Saanich, it borders the distinguished communities of Cadboro Bay, Ten Mile Point and Gordon Head. The areas is primarily residential, featuring generous lot sizes and elegant homes surrounded by mature trees and ocean air. While density has increased in recent years, much of the classic west coast and mid-century architecture that defines Arbutus endures.
The highlight of the neighbourhood is its peaceful setting by the water with easy access to beaches and parks. Beautiful views of the Haro Strait are visible throughout the neighbourhood, plus most neighbours keep their gardens in great shape.
Cinecenta Movie Theatre
The Arbutus neighbourhood is extremely close to the University of Victoria campus, where you will find Cinecenta movie theatre. The Cinecenta is a long-standing theatre that is affiliated with the university but remains open to the public. Open since 1971, this 300-seat theatre is an affordable alternative to the major theatres around town.
The Cinecenta is well-known for showing a mix of independent films, old classics, and even a few newer films. Students can grab tickets for $8, but the general public can get in for only $11. There’s also discounts for staff, alumni, children and seniors. As a bonus, the Cinecenta also has a leg up on the competition when it comes to the snacks. The Munchie Bar has great popcorn with real butter at no extra cost, plus quality beverages beyond just fountain pop, organic chocolate bars, and locally made baked goods.
Beach Access & Parks
The Arbutus neighbourhood is linked with beach access points and beach parks along nearly the entire eastern edge of the community. Being such a walkable neighbourhood, the various parks dotting the area make for some very scenic walks.
Starting in the southern end of the neighbourhood, there’s Cranford Park and Beach Access with a rocky beach that allows off leash dogs. Then there’s Guinevere Beach Access which is just as rocky. Moving north you’ll find the Finnerty Cove Beach Access with a nice walkable beach. North still is Hollydene Park and Gordon Head Beach, another walkable beach with pebbly sand. Then finally you’ll reach Arbutus Cove & Gordon Head Beach Park, with lots of open space and another pebbly beach.
Neighbourhood Schools
Besides the beaches, one of the main reasons why Arbutus is so desirable is the nearby access to great schools.
- University of Victoria
The University of Victoria (UVic) is Victoria’s premier university and repeatedly recognized as one of the best in the country. Established back in 1903 (originally as a McGill University affiliate), the school educates over 20,000 students and specializes in public research, engineering, sciences, social sciences and humanities. The UVic Vikes athletics also make for some great entertainment!
- Arbutus Middle School
Arbutus Middle School is a public middle school in School District 61 for children in grades 6 through 8. The school is home to around 450 students each year, with a catchment including Ten Mile Point, Cadboro Bay, Arbutus, part of Gordon Head, and the area surrounding the university. The school is home to a number of clubs including chess, athletic leadership, math challengers, robotics, musical theatre, adventure card games, dance, and many more.
- Frank Hobbs Elementary
Frank Hobbs Elementary is a public elementary school on Haro Road for children in Kindergarten through grade 5. The school sits in a relaxed park-like setting with a preschool attached to the shared field. The school is supported by a committed Parent Advisory Council and numerous volunteers, creating a welcoming and tight-knit community.
