Victoria News – Neighbours fear losing field to a community garden

The idea of a community garden on a parcel of land behind Saanich Commonwealth Place doesn’t sit well for some area residents.

Geoff McLean‘s insight:

The question is; what IS the best use of this land?  Recreational use by a larger group of people, or agricultural use by a smaller group? Community gardens are valuable for local food security as well as providing recreation (of a sort) and excercise.  We can’t, however, overlook the need for free greenspace for unstructured activities (like fetch with Fido).  Hmmm, this field is very close to Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park, almost 450 hectares of park system including lots of places to walk the dog. What do YOU think?
