Greater Victoria – Sidney
Yes, Sidney is a place where retirees and seniors can find much that is geared towards a laid-back, relaxed lifestyle, but that’s not to say that Sidney only offers these sorts of activities! This seaside town also provides opportunity for more active and exciting recreational pursuits as well.
The waters around Sidney are a vast playground where many different sports or leisure activities are available. Several local marinas offer a place to moor your boat so you can have quick access to fishing, sailing or cruising. Divers from all over the world journey here to experience the incredible variety of life within our local waters, and for those who prefer to remain above water, there are wildlife viewing and whalewatching tours to be enjoyed.
You might want to visit Sidney Island, just 4 kms offshore. There is a passenger ferry service if you haven’t a boat to get there. This long, low island features an enormous sandspit at low tide, and offers incredible beaches and hiking trails, as well as camping within the Sidney Spit Marine Park at the north end of the island.
Perhaps you can see a theme emerging here, much of Sidney’s activities centre on its seaside location, and why not? Another treasure which is particularly informative for families is the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre, an aquarium and marine education centre featuring fantastic exhibits and touch pools where visitors of all ages can get up close and personal with all sorts of sea creatures.
Sidney-by-the-Sea does a great job of promoting its marine influenced lifestyle, I think even Popeye would be happy living here, with the fresh salt air and small town vibe. Hmmm, I wonder if I could pick up some spinach at the summer market!
