The population of Sidney is definitely skewed north – there are many retirees and seniors who have chosen to live in this community. It’s easy to see why, the lovely temperate climate, seaside location and proximity to the Victoria International Airport, BC and Washington Ferries makes it easy to travel (and return from travelling!).
The town of Sidney has focussed on providing amenities and activities geared towards this crowd as well. The core of the town is very pedestrian friendly, and there are a dozen bookstores within strolling distance of each other. Many coffeeshops and restaurants offer outdoor seating adding to the genial atmosphere you’ll find on Sidney’s streets
Each Thursday evening in the summer (June through August) the main drag, Beacon Avenue is closed to vehicle traffic for the summer street market. Over 200 vendors converge to display and sell their goods which range from hand made crafts, works of art, farm fresh produce, and tasty street food. The market draws people from all over the peninsula and beyond, adding to the economy of Sidney as well as providing great small town entertainment and a festive atmosphere.
Sidney’s artisans and artists host several events that are popular with retirees and others including:
- Artisans Show and Sale – Midsummer
- Gallery by the Sea – June to late September
- Laroche Plein Air Paint Out — August
- Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts Society Spring Show and Sale
- Sidney Fine Art Show – Fall
- Studio Tours – June and October
- Summer Bandstand Concert Series – July and August
- Summer Theatre – July and August
