Victoria’s First Halloween Mud Run

After your Halloween sugar rush subsides you can experience the rush all over again, but in a much healthier way!  On November 2nd the inaugural Mudd, Sweat and Tears Halloween 5k race takes place at Westshore Motocross Park. It’s the perfect outdoor activity for people living in Victoria who want to work of some of those extra Halloween candy calories.

I don’t really expect the athletes who take part in these races actually indulge in too much candy though.  This Mudd, Sweat and Tears race is not for the faint of heart or dedicated couch potato.  It’s a 5 kilometre obstacle course featuring steep ascents, difficult obstacles and of course, deep mud pits.  The MST website warns that ‘If you’re not of average or above average fitness levels, prepared to race hard, race smart and help your fellow competitors, then this may not be the event for you.  You will get dirty, muddy, scraped up, cold, physically and mentally punished, and may end up smiling continuously.’

MST organises events across Canada as well as in the US, Germany, Australia and Belize and raises funds for a number of charities.  In Canada they support Breakfast Clubs of Canada, a nationally registered charity providing nutritionally balanced breakfasts to kids in participating schools who otherwise wouldn’t start their day with a balanced breakfast, due to circumstances beyond their control.

I love the Mudd, Sweat and Tears codex – it captures the spirit of these events perfectly, and could serve quite well as a general code of conduct for everyday life:

  • We don’t quit
  • We don’t whine
  • We take care of ourselves in order to take care of our team mates and help others
  • We treat ourselves and each other with respect
  • We take every obstacle with pride
  • When we fall, we get up, but first we enjoy the slide!
  • Lending a helping hand is nothing to brag about, it’s the only way to achieve something

So if you’re looking for a challenge, register for the first Mudd, Sweat and Tears 5k in Victoria on Nov 2nd. They are even encouraging competitors to show up in costume, though you might want to assess the manoeuverability of your outfit before deciding to do that!
